The New River and the New River Trail
Virginia's Millenium Legacy Trail,
the New River Trail State Park, runs beside the New River, which
also runs right beside Riversong Cabins! Our premium location
ensures a vacation or get away unlike any other for nature lovers!
The New River Trail is Virginia's longest linear park, following
a recent trend in creating "green ways" where railroads
formerly existed. The New River Trail parallels the New River
for 39 miles. Contrary to its name, the New River is one of the
oldest rivers in the world, and one of a few North American rivers
that flow north. Because of the wide diversity of habitats, many
types of vegetation and wildlife can be observed. Keep your eyes
open for one of the park's spectacular scenes!
The
park is a former railroad bed consisting primary of cinder and
ballast stone. Because of the former railbed the trail provides
a relatively level surface, easily traversed for hikers, bicyclists
and horseback riders. The level surface also provides the opportunity
for physically disabled persons to enjoy the park. Although the
park is level, trail conditions do vary depending on weather,
type of use and frequency of use. Please be prepared for any condition.
